How much ease is expected with this garment? Mainly asking so I can find the right size for me. Thanks!
24.02.2025 - 22:52DROPS Design answered:
Dear Mrs Hwang, measure a similar garment you have and like the shape and compare these measurements to the one in the chart (note that the measurements in the chart are in cm, convert into inches here); this is the best way to find out the matching size and the appropriate ease you'd like. Read more here. Happy knitting!

What size in British sizing [ie 10, 12 etc] does medium cover in the Painted Sky pattern please? How many 50g balls of Drops Melody would I need please ?

Dear Mrs Jordan, to find out the best appropriate size measure a similar garment you have and like the size and compare these measurements to the ones in the chart at the bottom of the page. Read more here. You will find the total amount of yarn required for each size under the header, tab "Pattern"; so that in size S and M for example you need here 250 g DROPS Melody / 50 g a ball = 5 balls DROPS Melody in the both first sizes. Happy knitting!

------------------------------------------------------- EXPLANATIONS FOR THE PATTERN: ------------------------------------------------------- GARTER STITCH (worked back and forth): Knit all rows. 1 ridge = knit 2 rows. INCREASE TIP (for sleeves): Increase 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread: Work until there is 1 stitch left before the marker-thread, make 1 yarn over, knit 2 (marker-thread sits between these 2 stitches), make 1 yarn over. On the next round, knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stockinette stitch. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- SWEATER – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The pattern uses both long and short circular needles; start with the length which fits the number of stitches and change when necessary. The sweater is worked bottom up. The front and back pieces are started separately for the split in the sides, then placed on the same circular needle and continued in the round with circular needle as far as the armholes. The piece is divided and the front and back pieces finished separately. The sleeves are worked in the round bottom up as far as the sleeve cap, which is finished back and forth. The pieces are sewn together and the neck worked in the round to finish. FRONT PIECE: Cast on 94-102-106-114-122-134 stitches with circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7 and DROPS Melody. Work rib as follows from the right side: 2 edge stitches in GARTER STITCH – read description above, * knit 2, purl 2 *, work from *-* until there are 4 stitches left, knit 2 and 2 edge stitches in garter stitch. Work this rib back and forth for 6 cm = 2⅜". Cut the strand and lay the piece to one side. BACK PIECE: Work in the same way as the front piece until the rib measures 6 cm = 2⅜". Do not cut the strand. BODY: Change to circular needle size 6 MM = US 10 and work stockinette stitch from the right side over the stitches from the back and front pieces. AT THE SAME TIME, decrease 36-40-36-40-40-48 stitches evenly on the first round = 152-164-176-188-204-220 stitches. Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round and allow it to follow your work onwards. Continue with stockinette stitch until the piece measures 28-29-30-31-32-33 cm = 11"-11⅜"-11¾"-12¼"-12½"-13" from the cast-on edge. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! DIVIDE FOR THE ARMHOLES: On the next round, divide for the armholes as follows: Start 3-4-5-6-7-8 stitches before the marker-thread, bind off the next 6-8-10-12-14-16 stitches for the armhole, knit 70-74-78-82-88-94, bind off 6-8-10-12-14-16 stitches for the armhole, knit 70-74-78-82-88-94. The front and back pieces are finished separately, back and forth. FRONT PIECE: = 70-74-78-82-88-94 stitches. Continue with stockinette stitch back and forth. At the beginning of each row bind off for the armholes as follows: 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 1-1-2-2-4-6 times on each side = 64-68-70-74-76-78 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 43-45-46-48-49-51 cm = 17"-17¾"-18"-19"-19¼"-20" from the cast-on edge. Place the middle 14-14-16-16-18-18 stitches on 1 thread for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. Continue with stockinette stitch and bind off at the beginning of each row from the neck as follows: 3 stitches 1 time, 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times = 18-20-20-22-22-23 stitches. Work until the piece measures 50-52-54-56-58-60 cm = 19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝". Bind off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. BACK PIECE: = 70-74-78-82-88-94 stitches. Work stockinette stitch back and forth and bind off for the armholes at the beginning of each row as follows: 2 stitches 1 time, and 1 stitch 1-1-2-2-4-6 times on both sides = 64-68-70-74-76-78 stitches. When the piece measures 48-50-52-54-56-58 cm = 19"-19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾", bind off the middle 26-26-28-28-30-30 stitches for the neckline and finish each shoulder separately. Continue with stockinette stitch and bind off 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row from the neck = 18-20-20-22-22-23 stitches. Work until the piece measures 50-52-54-56-58-60 cm = 19¾"-20½"-21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝". Bind off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. SLEEVES: Cast on 52-52-56-60-64-68 stitches with double pointed needles size 4.5 MM = US 7 and DROPS Melody. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 6 cm = 2⅜". Change to double pointed needles size 6 MM = US 10. Knit 1 round and decrease 10-8-8-10-12-12 stitches evenly spaced = 42-44-48-50-52-56 stitches. Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round, allow it to follow your work onwards. Continue with stockinette stitch. When the sleeve measures 9-9-8-8-8-9 cm = 3½"-3½"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3⅛"-3½", increase 1 stitch on each side of the marker-thread – read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every 2½-2½-2½-2½-2-1½ cm = 1"-1"-1"-1"-¾"-½" a total of 8-8-8-8-9-9 times = 58-60-64-66-70-74 stitches. Work until the sleeve measures 30-29-28-28-26-24 cm = 11¾"-11⅜"-11"-11"-10¼"-9½". On the next round bind off for the sleeve cap as follows: Start 3-4-5-6-7-8 stitches before the marker-thread, bind off 6-8-10-12-14-16 stitches = 52-52-54-54-56-58 stitches. Continue with stockinette stitch back and forth, binding off at the beginning of each row on each side as follows: 3 stitches 4-3-2-2-3-3 times, then 2-2-2-2-1-1 stitches at the beginning of each row on each side until the sleeve measures 36 cm = 14¼" in all sizes. Bind off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Bind off the remaining stitches. The sleeve measures approx. 37 cm = 14½" in all sizes. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the sleeves to the armholes. NECK: Using circular needle size 4.5 MM = US 7, knit up from the right side 88 to 104 stitches (including the stitches from the thread) around the neck, starting at one shoulder seam – stitch count must be divisible by 4. Work rib (knit 2, purl 2) in the round for 9 cm = 3½". Bind off a little loosely. Fold the neck double to the inside and fasten down with a couple of stitches. |
