Can this cardigan be knitted on straight needles?
12.06.2024 - 12:25DROPS Design answered:
Dear Bridgett, back and front pieces are worked back and forth on circular needle to get enough room for all stitches, you can then just work each piece as explained on straight needles. For sleeves, this lesson will help you to make the required adjustments. Happy crocheting!

Hello! Confused about this part in the R/L panels: "Then bind off for the neck as follows: 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times" what does this mean? Thanks in advance!
19.04.2023 - 04:26DROPS Design answered:
Hi Simran, From the edge by the neck you bind off 2 stitches, work to end of row and work back. Then you bind off 1 st on the next row and repeat this one more time. Hope this helps and happy knitting!

On the next round knit the yarn overs twisted to avoid holes. Then work the new stitches in stockinette stitch. ------------------------------------------------------- START THE PIECE HERE: ------------------------------------------------------- JACKET – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE. The piece is worked back and forth with circular needle, bottom up, in sections which are then sewn together. The sleeves are worked in the round with double pointed needles/short circular needle. The neck is worked to finish. BACK PIECE: Cast on 56-60-68-72-80-88 stitches with circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in GARTER STITCH – read description above, knit 2, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there is 1 stitch left, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Work this rib for 10 cm = 4". Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11. Work 1 row and decrease 6-6-8-8-8-10 stitches evenly spaced = 50-54-60-64-72-78 stitches. Continue with stockinette stitch. REMEMBER THE KNITTING GAUGE! When the piece measures 37-38-39-40-41-42 cm = 14½"-15"-15¼"-15¾"-16⅛"-16½", bind off 2 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows for the armholes = 46-50-56-60-68-74 stitches. Continue working until the piece measures 54-56-58-60-62-64 cm = 21¼"-22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼". On the next row bind off the middle 16-18-18-20-22-22 stitches for the neck and finish each shoulder separately. Bind off 1 stitch on the next row from the neck = 14-15-18-19-22-25 stitches on the shoulder. Work until the piece measures 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26", bind off. Work the other shoulder in the same way. RIGHT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 41-45-49-49-53-57 stitches with circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. Purl 1 row from the wrong side, then work as follows from the right side: 8 band stitches in garter stitch, knit 2, purl 2, knit 2, A.1, * knit 2, purl 2*, work from *-* until there are 3 stitches left, knit 2 and 1 edge stitch in garter stitch. Work this rib for 10 cm = 4", remember the BUTTONHOLE – read description above. Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11 and work as follows from the right side: 8 band stitches in garter stitch, knit 6, purl 4, A.2, purl 4, knit 6-10-14-14-18-22 and decrease 1-3-4-2-2-3 stitches evenly over these stitches, 1 edge stitch in garter stitch = 40-42-45-47-51-54 stitches. Continue this pattern. When the piece measures 37-38-39-40-41-42 cm = 14½"-15"-15¼"-15¾"-16⅛"-16½", bind off 2 stitches on the next row from the side = 38-40-43-45-49-52 stitches. When the piece measures 48-50-51-53-54-56 cm = 19"-19¾"-20"-21"-21¼"-22", place the outermost 14-15-15-16-17-17 stitches towards mid-front on a thread for the neck, working them first to avoid cutting the strand. Then bind off for the neck as follows: 2 stitches 1 time and 1 stitch 2 times = 20-21-24-25-28-31 stitches on the shoulder. The stitches in A.2 are now worked in stockinette stitch. When the piece measures 55-57-59-61-63-65 cm = 21⅝"-22½"-23¼"-24"-24¾"-25½", decrease 6 stitches evenly over A.2 = 14-15-18-19-22-25 stitches. Bind off when the piece measures 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26". LEFT FRONT PIECE: Cast on 41-45-49-49-53-57 stitches with circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. Work this rib for 10 cm = 4". Change to circular needle size 8 MM = US 11 and work as follows from the right side: 1 edge stitch in garter stitch, knit 6-10-14-14-18-22 and decrease 1-3-4-2-2-3 stitches evenly over these stitches, purl 4, A.3, purl 4, knit 6, 8 band stitches in garter stitch = 40-42-45-47-51-54 stitches. The stitches in A.3 are now worked in stockinette stitch. When the piece measures 55-57-59-61-63-65 cm = 21⅝"-22½"-23¼"-24"-24¾"-25½", decrease 6 stitches evenly over A.3 = 14-15-18-19-22-25 stitches. Bind off when the piece measures 56-58-60-62-64-66 cm = 22"-22¾"-23⅝"-24⅜"-25¼"-26". SLEEVE: Cast on 36-40-40-44-44-48 stitches with double pointed needles 7 MM = US 10.75 and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. Knit 1 round, then work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 10 cm = 4". Change to double pointed needles size 8 MM = US 11. Knit 1 round and decrease 4-6-4-6-4-6 stitches evenly spaced = 32-34-36-38-40-42 stitches. Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round = mid-under sleeve. Work stockinette stitch. When the piece measures 11 cm = 4⅜", increase 1 stitch on each side of the marker – read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every 9½-9½-9-9-8½-8 cm = 3 5/9"-3 5/9"-3½"-3½"-3¼"-3⅛" 4 more times = 42-44-46-48-50-52 stitches. Bind off when the sleeve measures 52-52-50-49-46-45 cm = 20½"-20½"-19¾"-19¼"-18"-17¾". Work the other sleeve in the same way. ASSEMBLY: Sew the shoulder seams. Sew the side seams in the outermost loop of the outermost stitch as far as the rib (10 cm = 4" split in each side). Sew in the sleeves. Sew the buttons onto the left band. DOUBLE NECK: Start from the right side on one shoulder and knit up 62 to 78 stitches around the neck (including the stitches on the threads), with circular needle size 7 MM = US 10.75 and DROPS Wish or 2 strands DROPS Air. The number of stitches should be divisible by 4+2. Start from the wrong side and work as follows: 8 band stitches in garter stitch, * purl 2, knit 2 *, work from *-* until there are 10 stitches left, purl 2 and 8 band stitches in garter stitch. Work this rib for 6 cm = 2⅜". Bind off 7 band stitches on each side and continue the rib with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch on each side until the neck measures 12 cm = 4¾". Bind off. Fold the neck double to the inside and sew down. To avoid the neck being tight and rolling outwards, it is important that the seam is elastic. |
