Hi. Just starting the hat pattern. Can you please explain what is meant by “twisted” when purling the yarn over? Thanks
06.11.2021 - 08:23DROPS Design answered:
Dear Lavinia, it means that you knit into the back of the stitch, so it gets twisted. Happy Knitting!

Bon tricot!

INFORMATION FOR THE PATTERN: RIDGE/GARTER STITCH (worked in the round): 1 ridge = 2 rounds. Knit 1 round and purl 1 round. PATTERN: Hat: See diagrams A.1 to A.3. Neck warmer: See diagrams A.1 and A.2. INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to increase evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g. 48 stitches) and divide by the number of increases to be made (e.g. 42) = 1.1. In this example, increase after approx. every stitch by making 1 yarn over. On the next round work the yarn overs twisted to prevent holes. DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced): To work out how to decrease evenly, count the total number of stitches on the needle (e.g.120 stitches), and divide by the number of decreases to be made (e.g. 18) = 6.6. In this example, knit alternately every 5th and 6th stitch and every 6th and 7th stitch together. ---------------------------------------------------------- HAT: The hat is worked in the round, top down with double pointed needles/short circular needle. BOTH SIZES: Cast on 12 stitches with double pointed needles size 4 mm / US 6 and Puna. NOTE: Leave a strand end of approx. 30 cm / 11¾" to pull the top of the hat together at the end! ROUND 1: Knit ROUND 2: * Knit 1, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* to end of round = 24 stitches. ROUND 3: * Knit 1, purl the yarn over twisted, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* to end of round = 36 stitches. ROUND 4: * Knit 1, purl 1, purl yarn over twisted, 1 yarn over *, work from *-* = 48 stitches. ROUND 5: * Knit 1, purl 2, purl yarn over twisted *, work from *-*. ROUND 6: * Knit 1, purl 3 *, work from *-*. ROUNDS 7-8: Knit over knit and purl over purl. Work 2 RIDGES – see description above. Knit 1 round where you increase 42 stitches evenly on round – read INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced) = 90 stitches (on the next round, purl the yarn overs twisted). REMEMBER THE GAUGE! Now work A.1 (= 15 repeats of 6 stitches). When the whole of A.1 has been completed in height there are 120 stitches on the round. Work 2 ridges where you decrease 18-14 stitches evenly on first round of the ridges – read DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced) = 102-106 stitches. Knit 3 rounds. Now work A.2a (= 51-53 repeats of 2 stitches) 3-4 times in height. Then work A.2b over each repeat of A.2a 1-1 time in height. Work 2 ridges. Knit 1 round where you increase 24-26 stitches evenly on round = 126-132 stitches. Work A.3 (= 21-22 repeats of 6 stitches) to end of round. When A.3 has been completed in height, work 2 ridges where you decrease 12-12 stitches evenly on first round of the ridges = 114-120 stitches. Knit 1 round. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm / US 4. Then work rib (knit 1 /purl 2). When you have worked 12 rounds of rib, bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Cut and fasten the strand. The hat measures approx. 27-28 cm / 10½"-11". Pull together the top of the hat by threading the strand up and down in each and every stitch, pull tight and fasten the strand. ---------------------------------------------------------- NECK WARMER: The neck warmer is worked in the round, top down. Cast on 153-162 stitches with circular needle size 3.5 mm / US 4 and Puna. Purl 1 round from the wrong side. Turn the piece and continue working in the round from the right side as follows: Work rib (knit 1 / purl 2) in the round. When you have worked 6 rounds rib change to circular needle size 4 mm / US 6. Knit 1 round where you decrease 33-34 stitches evenly on round – read DECREASE TIP (evenly spaced) = 120-128 stitches. Work 2 RIDGES - see description above. Knit 3 rounds. REMEMBER THE GAUGE! Now work A.2a (= 60-64 repeats of 2 stitches) a total of 9-11 times in height. Then work A.2b over each repeat of A.2a. Work 2 ridges, AT THE SAME TIME on round 3 increase 24-28 stitches evenly on round – read INCREASE TIP (evenly spaced) = 144-156 stitches. Now work A.1 (= 24-26 repeats of 6 stitches). When the whole of diagram A.1 has been completed in height, there are 192-208 stitches on the round. Work 2 ridges. Knit 1 round and decrease 0-1 stitch = 192-207 stitches. Change to circular needle size 3.5 mm / US 4. Work rib (knit 1,purl 2). When you have worked 4 rounds of rib, increase all purl 2 to purl 3 = 256-276 stitches. When you have worked a total of 6 rounds rib, bind off with knit over knit and purl over purl. Cut and fasten the strand. The neck warmer measures approx. 24-26 cm / 9½"-10¼" in height. |
