Stripe 1begins with knitting up 36 stitches along a cast on edge of 32 stitches before 1 central stitch. How do you increase the extra sts as you pick up 36 sts along that edge?

Dear Mrs Halliday, just pick up the extra sts between 2 "usual" stitches so that you have the correct number of sts. Happy knitting!

GARTER ST (back and forth on needle): K all rows. DECREASE TIP: Dec 1 st by K2 last sts tog. -------------------------------------------------------- BAG: Worked back and forth on circular needle, top down. The bag is worked in 2 parts which are sewn tog in the sides and at the bottom when finished. Start with half a domino square and knit up sts on each side in stripes until finished measurements. See diagram X.1 for color change and how to work the bag. The piece is worked in garter st, i.e. K all rows. Cast on 65 sts on circular needle size 6 mm / US 10 with royal blue. Insert a marker in the 33rd st (= the middle). Continue to work as follows: HALF A DOMINO SQUARE: Row 1 (= from WS): Work in K sts, K last 2 sts on needle tog. Row 2 (= from RS): K until 1 st remain before marker, slip 1 st as if to K, K 2 tog, psso, K until 2 sts remain, K the last 2 sts on needle tog. Repeat 1st and 2nd row, i.e. dec 2 sts in the middle of the square and 1 st in the sides on every other row until 1 st remain on needle, cut the thread and pull it through the last st. REMEMBER THE GAUGE! STRIPE 1: Knit up 36 sts on circular needle size 6 mm / US 10 with off white from RS on the right short side of half the domino square (see diagram X.1). Work garter st back and forth over all sts, while AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at the end of every row from WS - READ DECREASE TIP! When a total of 18 rows in garter st (9 ridges) have been worked vertically there are 27 sts on needle. Last row is from WS, slip sts on a stitch holder. STRIPE 2: Knit up from RS 1 st in every ridge (2 rows in garter st) from the short side of stripe 1 (= 9 sts) with denim blue and continue to knit up 36 sts on the left short side of half the domino square = 45 sts. On beg of next row from WS, K the first 2 sts tog, K the rest of the row = 44 sts. Then work garter st back and forth over all sts, while AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at the end of every row from RS. When a total of 18 rows in garter st (9 ridges) have been worked vertically there are 36 sts on needle. Last row is from WS, slip sts on a stitch holder. STRIPE 3: Slip sts from stripe 1 back on needle from RS and continue to knit up 1 st in every ridge (2 rows in garter st) on short side of stripe 2 (= 9 sts) with royal blue = 36 sts. Work garter st back and forth over all sts, while AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 st at the end of every row from WS. When a total of 18 rows in garter st (9 ridges) have been worked vertically there are 27 sts on needle. Last row is from WS, slip sts on a stitch holder. Continue as 2nd and 3rd stripe until a total of 6 stripes have been worked. See X.1 for color change. NOTE! At the end of stripe 5 and 6, LOOSELY bind off with K from RS instead of slipping stitches on a stitch holder. Now one half of the bag is finished. Knit another part the same way. ASSEMBLY: Half the domino square is the opening of the bag. Sew the sides and the bottom tog, ridge against ridge, in front loop of outermost st. SHOULDER STRAP: Knit up 6 sts from one side of the bag on circular needle size 6 mm / US 10 with royal blue. Work back and forth in garter st until piece measures 150 cm / 59". Sew shoulder strap at the top in the opposite side. FELTING: Place the bag in the washing machine with a detergent without enzymes and optical bleach. Wash warm at 104F with normal spin but no pre-wash. After wash shape the bag to the right size while still wet and leave to dry flat. At subsequent wash, wash the bag at regular wool program. AFTER FELTING: If the piece is not felted enough and is too big: Wash the piece one more time in the washing machine while it is still wet add a terry towel that measures approx. 50 x 70 cm = 19¾" x 27½" - NOTE: Do not use a short program. If the piece has been felted too much and is too small: While the piece is still wet stretch it to the correct measurements, if the piece is dry, make sure to soak it first. Remember: All subsequent washes are as a normal wool garment. |
